From Tisch Library’s 1514 edition of Hesychiou Lexicon. According to the seller’s notes, this copy was bought at Paris by Jaspar Alpheus in 1518—and that is where I gasp a little. For me, this is one of those vertiginous monuments when time itself opens up, and for a few seconds I am with Jaspar in 16th c. Paris as he inscribes his new purchase….
Gift of Walter F. Welch.
(The binding is not contemporary, by the way. It is 18th century green morocco.)
